2002 Swimming (Men)

Established at the turn of the century, the McMurry swimming program has been a staple of the athletic department for over two decades and continues to write new chapters each year. For the first time since the program started, two of its teams were inducted into the McMurry Hall of Honor in 2021 – both the men and women from 2002.

The 2002 men's and women's swim teams were led by legendary head coach Bev Ball, who started McMurry's program in 2000 and now has over 70 years of coaching experience. Coach Ball was the first Hall of Honor inductee associated with the swim program, entering in 2017.

There are 25 swimmers recognized with the 2002 teams.

It did not take long for McMurry to get the ball rolling, joining the New South Intercollegiate Conference (NSISC) from 2000-05 and winning the league championship on both the men's and women's side.

At the 2002 meet, McMurry competed in the White Division and ran away with it by a wide margin. McMurry finished with 330 points on the men's side, beating second place Springhill College with 240 and the University of the Incarnate Word with 51 in third place.

McMurry's two breaststroke records on the men's side still stand from that season, both set by Joe Salinas. Salinas swam a time of 59.01 in the 100 and a 2:11.81 in the 200. The 200 medley relay team from that season also still holds the school record at 1:36.03, including Salinas, Matt Broussard, Ryan Black and Sean Young.

One of the captains from the 2002 team, junior Casey Pacheco, would go on to make contributions to the program after his career. Pacheco, a four-year letterman and 2004 graduate, later became the head coach and served for four seasons.

Following her success in 2002 – and beyond – Coach Ball formally retired in 2017. Since then, she continued to serve as Head Coach Emeritus with assistance from Coach Barbara Brock.
