2002 Swimming (Women)

Established at the turn of the century, the McMurry swimming program has been a staple of the athletic department for over two decades and continues to write new chapters each year. For the first time since the program started, two of its teams were inducted into the McMurry Hall of Honor in 2021 – both the men and women from 2002.

The 2002 men's and women's swim teams were led by legendary head coach Bev Ball, who started McMurry's program in 2000 and now has over 70 years of coaching experience. Coach Ball was the first Hall of Honor inductee associated with the swim program, entering in 2017.

There are 25 swimmers recognized as part of the 2002 roster.

It did not take long for McMurry to get the ball rolling, joining the New South Intercollegiate Conference (NSISC) from 2000-05 and winning the league championship on both the men's and women's side.

At the 2002 meet, McMurry competed in the White Division and ran away with it by a wide margin. McMurry bested Springhill College and Incarnate Word with a dominant 369 point performance. The other two teams combined for 29 total points.

The women's side no longer has standing records from 2002, but national qualifier Hillary Pool (Lidell) would go on to hold two standing records later in her career. Pool owns the 100 breaststroke record set in 2003 at 1:08.31, while also holding the 200 breaststroke record at 2:30.44 set in 2004.

Following her success in 2002 – and beyond – Coach Ball formally retired in 2017. Since then, she continues to serve as Head Coach Emeritus with assistance from Coach Barbara Brock.
