1924 Baseball

Induction Year: 2009

In the spring of 1924 – just the second year of McMurry’s existence – a group of 13 young men with names like “Red,” Razzberries,” “Cisco” and “Shorty” made McMurry history, fielding the school’s first baseball team. While that team played only five games – winning four – they were the start of a proud, albeit sporadic, McMurry athletic tradition.

McMurry initially fielded a baseball team until 1928, when the University was forced to drop the program due to a lack of area colleges with baseball programs. In 1940, however, amidst the chaos of World War II, baseball returned to McMurry, if only for a short time. The sport was suspended from 1942-45 due to the war, but was reestablished in 1946 before again being dropped in the late spring of 1948. After a 47-year absence, McMurry brought back baseball in 1996 and has enjoyed tremendous success since then.
